The Trump administration is considering banning the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek from U.S. government devices over national security concerns, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to disclose that U.S. officials are concerned about how DeepSeek handles customer data, which the business claims it maintains in servers based in China.
According to the Journal, the chatbot may soon be removed from app stores in the U.S., and cloud service providers could face restrictions on offering DeepSeek’s AI models to their clients. However, these discussions are still in the early stages.
Also, the release of DeepSeek’s cheap AI models caused a big drop in stock prices around the world in January. Investors were afraid that DeepSeek could challenge the current leaders in the AI market.
Last Thursday, the attorneys general of 21 states asked Congress to pass a bill that would stop government machines from downloading and using DeepSeek software.
