In a major step toward promoting green mobility, the Punjab government has made it mandatory for all new petrol pumps across the province to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The move aims to encourage EV adoption and tackle air pollution in major urban centers like Lahore, which frequently ranks among the world’s most polluted cities.
With Pakistan’s fuel prices soaring and air quality worsening, especially in Punjab’s urban hubs, the government has been under pressure to promote sustainable transport solutions. This decision aligns with Punjab’s Clean Air and Green Energy initiatives, which aim to reduce carbon emissions and support the shift toward electric mobility.
According to officials, the policy requires every newly licensed petrol station to include at least one EV charging unit as part of its infrastructure plan. The goal is to make EV charging more accessible and eliminate one of the biggest barriers to owning electric cars the lack of charging facilities.
A senior official from the Punjab Transport Department said,
“The province cannot fight smog and rising fuel costs without transitioning to electric mobility. Mandatory EV chargers at fuel stations will make adoption easier for the public.”
Authorities will soon issue implementation guidelines detailing technical requirements, safety standards, and timelines for compliance.
Punjab’s decision follows similar global trends where governments are mandating EV infrastructure to accelerate green transportation. Experts believe this move could also attract EV manufacturers and investors to Pakistan, supporting the country’s broader climate and energy goals.
