Karachi Speed Limit Announced Across Major Roads

The Karachi speed limit has officially been enforced across major routes, as the city’s traffic police introduce new monitoring systems and digital enforcement tools to regulate driving behaviour and reduce violations.

Under the updated traffic regulations, motorcycles and light transport vehicles will be allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 60 kilometres per hour, while heavy transport vehicles will be restricted to 30 kilometres per hour across designated routes.

Deputy Inspector General Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah confirmed that the department is installing advanced speed-monitoring systems equipped with cameras throughout the city to record speeds and identify violations. Additionally, trackers are being fitted in 10,000 heavy transport vehicles, which will be linked to the Traffic Regulation and Citation System for real-time speed monitoring and data tracking.

He stated that TRACS is currently operational across 40 percent of Karachi and is integrated with more than 1,700 cameras. The system is fully functional in District South, where major arteries such as Shahrah e Faisal are already connected and monitoring traffic activity.

E challans are being issued in Malir, Korangi, East, Keamari, and Central districts for various offenses, including overspeeding, driving in the wrong direction, signal violations, not wearing helmets, and failing to use seat belts. The Karachi speed limit enforcement is a key part of this expanded digital monitoring effort.

The DIG further said that the system will soon cover industrial areas, including SITE, Landhi, New Karachi, and Korangi, where camera based surveillance, speed detection equipment, and TRACS connectivity will be added to improve compliance.

He also revealed that Karachi’s Traffic Management System is expected to be fully operational by next year. The installation of an additional 11,000 cameras is scheduled to begin in January 2026, significantly expanding the city’s traffic monitoring network.
