Punjab authorities have issued fines to over 48,400 vehicles this month for violating smoke emission regulations, as part of a tougher crackdown ordered by DIG Traffic Muhammad Waqas Nazir. The campaign aims to reduce air pollution and enforce environmental and traffic laws across the province.
Traffic officials reported that fines exceeding Rs97 million have been imposed, marking an 85% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, fitness certificates of 10 vehicles have been suspended, and route permits of 16 repeat offenders revoked.
“Any vehicle producing heavy smoke will be fined Rs2,000, with possible additional legal penalties,” a police spokesperson said.
The enforcement also targeted transport vehicles contributing to road pollution, including over 2,100 trolleys carrying soil and sand, and officers registered seven FIRs against vehicles in serious violation of regulations. Officials emphasized that the crackdown is part of a broader effort to improve air quality and public safety throughout Punjab.
This strict enforcement highlights the provincial government’s commitment to environmental protection and ensuring cleaner roads for citizens.
