Transport Strike Threatens Exports, OICCI Issues Urgent Appeal
Pakistan’s business community has raised urgent concerns as the nationwide cargo transporters’ strike enters its fifth day, severely affecting manufacturers and exporters. In a letter to Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, the OICCI has requested immediate intervention to prevent further disruption to industrial operations.
Cargo transporters across Punjab and Sindh have halted operations in protest against new regulatory conditions imposed by provincial authorities. The strike has caused delays in the movement of raw materials and finished goods, increasing fears of production halts and export losses for key industries.
The Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) has urged immediate government action as the ongoing cargo transporters’ strike disrupts supply chains nationwide. In a letter to Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, OICCI Secretary General M. Abdul Aleem highlighted that the strike is
“creating a very negative impact on the operations of major manufacturers and exporters,” adding that some companies may even face temporary factory closures if the situation continues.
He said the strike stems from
“certain regulatory conditions put in place by the provincial authorities of Punjab and Sindh,” prompting transporters to suspend goods movement across the country.
Industry insiders warn that prolonged disruption will not only affect local production but also threaten export commitments and government revenue. The letter further noted that continued delays could
“send a negative message to the international community regarding business continuity in Pakistan,” especially for foreign investors.
Stakeholders have requested the commerce minister’s urgent intervention to restore normal cargo movement and avert a deeper economic challenge.
