Zong Joins Universal Services Fund Board

The Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises has approved the nomination of Zong’s Chief Executive Officer to the Board of the Universal Services Fund Company, marking a key decision in the telecom sector.

The committee met on Monday at the Finance Division under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and senior officials from relevant ministries and regulators also attended the meeting.

During the session, the committee reviewed and approved multiple agenda items from the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications. These included board-level appointments and reconstitutions at Pakistan Reinsurance Company Limited, State Life Insurance Corporation, and Ignite Company.

The committee also approved the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication’s proposal to appoint the CEO of Zong as a director on the USF board. The appointment will represent Mobile-Cellular Licensees and will remain valid for the remaining term until June 2026.

In addition, the committee directed the Ministry of Industries and Production to submit a detailed, legally vetted plan for winding up Morafco Industries Limited.

The committee further considered a request from the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination to reconsider the winding up of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation. While noting the need for a national tourism coordination mechanism, the committee asked the ministry to resubmit a detailed proposal with a clear business case, governance structure, and staffing plan, in line with the government’s broader state-owned enterprise reform agenda.
