SBP Announces January 1, 2026 as Bank Holiday: No Public Dealing

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially announced a bank holiday for Thursday, January 1, 2026. According to an official Circular Letter, issued on December 30, 2025, all banks across the country will close their doors to public dealings.

This directive applies to all commercial banks, Development Financial Institutions (DFIs), and Microfinance Banks (MFBs). Consequently, you cannot visit branches for cash withdrawals, deposits, or other physical transactions on this date.

While the banks are closed to customers, this is not a holiday for banking staff. The SBP clarifies that all employees must attend the office as usual. Staff will utilise this time to carry out internal operations, ensure system maintenance, and manage essential banking processes. This standard practice allows banks to handle necessary technical work without the pressure of public footfall.

You can still manage your finances despite the branch closures. The bank holiday only restricts counter services. Digital platforms remain fully operational. You should utilise ATMs, mobile apps, and online banking portals for bill payments and fund transfers.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) advises customers to plan their financial activities in advance to avoid any inconvenience. With digital channels open, your essential transactions will proceed smoothly while the banks settle their internal accounts.
