The federal government has decided to redesign all Pakistani currency notes, ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 5,000, while planning to introduce a plastic polymer note alongside traditional paper currency, officials confirmed.
The move is part of an effort to modernize currency design, improve durability, and strengthen security features to curb counterfeiting. Importantly, no current notes will be discontinued, all existing denominations will remain valid during the transition.
Officials estimate that Pakistan currently has around Rs 10,260 billion in circulation, and banks will be given a clear timeline to exchange old notes for newly designed ones. The Federal Cabinet’s approval is expected soon before the rollout of the updated currency series.
While most denominations will remain paper-based, the polymer note, made from a special plastic material will be tested for durability and potential wider adoption if successful. Sources said the government plans to introduce all redesigned notes within 2026, ensuring smooth circulation and minimal disruption to daily transactions.
The redesigned notes will feature modern aesthetics and enhanced security elements, making them easier to handle and harder to counterfeit. The initiative reflects Pakistan’s broader efforts to update financial systems and strengthen public confidence in currency.
