Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has temporarily banned the installation of solar green meters for consumers, affecting thousands of domestic and industrial users. The move comes after directives from the Ministry of Energy, overriding previous instructions by NEPRA to continue solar meter installations.
Earlier, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had instructed power distribution companies to install solar green meters to encourage renewable energy usage and reduce consumer reliance on the national grid. However, the Ministry of Energy recently issued instructions to halt the process, forcing LESCO and other DISCOs to comply.
Officials confirmed that the ban will remain in place for one to two months, during which no new solar green meters will be installed. This suspension also affects new solar connections, leaving consumers who invested in solar systems concerned about their energy plans and potential savings.
LESCO officials noted, “The decision follows the Ministry of Energy’s instructions. All installations of solar green meters are temporarily stopped, and no new solar connections will be provided until a revised policy is announced.”
The suspension has sparked worries among households and businesses that had planned to shift partially to solar power to cut electricity costs. With all major DISCOs following suit, the rollout of solar green meters across Pakistan is effectively on hold.
Authorities are expected to release a new policy regarding solar green meters in the coming weeks. Until then, consumers are advised to monitor updates from LESCO and other distribution companies regarding future solar meter installations.
