Gamers might need to start saving up right now. Industry analysts predict the PlayStation 6 price could be set at $1,000 at launch. This news follows Sony’s recent decision to raise prices across its current-generation hardware. Starting April 2, 2026, the standard PS5 will jump from $550 to $650. Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition rises to $600, the PlayStation Portal hits $250, and the PS5 Pro reaches a staggering $900. Consequently, a $1,000 price tag for the next generation seems increasingly likely.
Are Consoles Becoming a Luxury?
Experts foresee a massive shift in the gaming market. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, believes a $999 variant of the PS6 is highly possible. Furthermore, he suggests Sony might launch at a high price to allow room for future discounts once the market stabilizes. NYU Video Games Professor Joost van Dreunen agrees with this assessment. He states that $1,000 consoles are quickly becoming the new normal. As a result, console gaming is transforming into a luxury expenditure. It is effectively losing its traditional value advantage over PC gaming.
However, a cheaper alternative might still exist. Hardware insider KeplerL2 recently leaked that the PS6 has a Bill of Materials (BOM) of around $750. Therefore, a retail price of $699 remains possible, but only if Sony subsidizes the cost or takes a loss.
Microsoft is also moving in this premium direction. The company recently teased its next-generation Xbox, codenamed Project Helix. Rumors suggest this new Xbox will cost anywhere between $1,000 and $1,500. Ultimately, both major next-gen consoles are on track to match the cost of a basic gaming PC.
Why Are Console Prices Skyrocketing?
Why are prices surging so rapidly? The ongoing global RAM crisis plays a massive role. Currently, AI data centers are purchasing massive quantities of RAM. Consequently, consumer RAM manufacturers have halted sales entirely. This shortage is driving up costs across the tech sector. Because of these compounding issues, Sony reportedly delayed the PS6 launch internally. Gamers should now expect the console closer to 2028 or 2029. When it finally arrives, rumors suggest the PS6 might feature a detachable disk drive and a dedicated handheld component.
