The Punjab School Education Department has decided to cut conveyance allowances for teachers as part of an ongoing austerity campaign, impacting more than 300,000 educators across Punjab.
According to official directives issued to District Education Authorities, teachers will now receive conveyance allowance only for the days they attend school. Any absence on a working day will result in a deduction of the allowance for that day.
Key Changes in Allowance Policy
- Conveyance allowance will be paid strictly on attendance basis
- No allowance will be provided for days of absence
- Fridays excluded from allowance as they are treated as weekly holidays in many public schools
Officials say the decision is part of broader cost-cutting measures aimed at reducing government expenditures.
The move has sparked concern among teachers, especially after reports that allowances for the past three weeks have already been withheld. Many educators fear that the policy will further strain their finances amid rising living costs.
The austerity measure is expected to significantly reduce spending but may also draw criticism from teacher unions and public sector employees across the province.
