Google is securing communication for everyday use by bringing end-to-end encryption to Gmail on mobile devices. Workspace users can now send and read encrypted emails directly from the Gmail app on both Android and iOS. This marks the first time Google has enabled native, encrypted email on mobile without relying on external tools.
Previously, Gmail’s client-side encryption feature worked only on desktop. Now, the company has extended this capability to smartphones, making the experience more seamless. Users no longer need separate apps or web portals to manage secure emails. Instead, everything runs inside the existing Gmail app, which simplifies daily workflows.
At the same time, Google has made sure the feature works across different email providers. If the recipient uses Gmail, the encrypted message appears like a normal email thread. However, if they use another service, they can still access the message through a secure browser interface. They do not need to install any additional software, which makes the process easier.
Google has already rolled out this update to both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. However, access is limited to users on the Enterprise Plus plan. They must also have either the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on. These plans mainly target enterprise and public sector organizations that need advanced compliance tools.
Before using the feature, administrators must enable mobile access through the client-side encryption settings in the Admin Console. Once activated, users can start sending secure emails on their phones.
To encrypt a message, users simply tap the lock icon in the compose window. Then, they select “additional encryption” before writing the email. This step ensures the message stays protected from end to end, even during transmission.
