Rockstar Games is navigating another severe cybersecurity incident. Yesterday, the notorious black-hat hacking collective ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for breaching the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI developer. Consequently, Rockstar faces a strict deadline to pay a ransom. The attackers threaten to release stolen corporate data if the company refuses. Currently, Rockstar has not issued a public statement regarding the situation.
How the Hackers Infiltrated the System
ShinyHunters did not breach Rockstar’s cloud data platform, Snowflake, directly. Instead, they targeted Anodot. Rockstar uses this third-party business monitoring tool to track cloud service costs. The hackers successfully obtained authentication tokens from Rockstar’s Anodot integrations.
Subsequently, they accessed the Snowflake environment disguised as legitimate users. Therefore, they managed to export large databases. Fortunately, the stolen information likely contains only corporate data. End-user accounts remain unaffected.
The Impending April 14 Ransom Deadline
The attackers gave Rockstar until April 14 to pay the ransom. If Rockstar fails to comply by Tuesday, ShinyHunters will leak the data publicly. This threat carries significant weight. Specifically, ShinyHunters possesses a well-documented history of extortion and data leaks.
Since their emergence in early 2020, the group has breached high-profile targets like Google, AT&T, Ticketmaster, and Harvard University. Previously, they leaked data from Crunchbase and Dutch telecom Odido when those victims refused to pay.
Past Security Breaches & GTA VI Development
If confirmed, this incident marks Rockstar’s second major breach during the development of GTA VI. Previously, in September 2022, the Lapsus$ group successfully phished an employee’s credentials. This attack leaked dozens of early gameplay clips online. Authorities later identified the hacker as 18-year-old Arion Kurtaj.
Astoundingly, Kurtaj executed the hack using only a hotel television, an Amazon Fire TV Stick, and a smartphone, all while under active police protection. In December 2023, a judge handed him an indefinite secure hospital order.
Meanwhile, GTA VI is entering its final development phase. In February, publisher Take-Two Interactive reaffirmed the game’s November 19, 2026, release date. Furthermore, official marketing and pre-orders will launch this summer.
