Fourth Wing, the best-selling romantasy novel by Rebecca Yarros, is officially in development as a Prime Video television series, with Michael B. Jordan’s production company Outlier Society producing the adaptation for Amazon MGM Studios.
Jordan has been giving fans occasional updates, and the picture emerging is of a production that is moving carefully rather than quickly.
“We are making sure that this is going to be an exciting show that delivers on all of the things the fans want and some of the things that they won’t be expecting either,” Jordan told media. “But trust me, I know how beloved this franchise IP is, and we’re diligently… We’re in the lab, we’re cooking up. We got it. It’s coming. It’s early stages, but I feel how much people care about this one. It’s not lost on us.”
The show has now attracted serious behind-the-scenes talent. Meredith Averill, who served as an executive producer on Wednesday, Jane the Virgin, and The Good Wife, joined the project as showrunner in September 2025.
The production team also includes Kilter Films, the banner run by Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Yarros herself is an executive producer on the series, and has already read two versions of the script under the previous showrunner.
“I was scared, I was super scared to read it,” she told fans at the Onyx Storm midnight release party. “I kicked my feet the entire time. I love it.”
Casting is the subject generating the most fan conversation, and Jordan has addressed it directly. Speaking to the BBC in February 2026, he said no “obvious choices” were coming and that the goal was to avoid anything that felt “cheesy.”
“It allows people to fall in love with the characters that they have imagined in their head without any baggage,” he said. “It’s going to be something that feels honest.”
When asked whether he might appear on screen himself, Jordan looked around before repeatedly saying “I don’t know,” which fans have taken as a non-denial.
The Empyrean series has sold more than 12 million copies since the first book launched. Onyx Storm, the third installment, was the fastest-selling adult novel of the last two decades, moving 2.7 million copies in its first week.
The show has not yet received an official series order, and no casting announcements have been made. Based on Jordan’s comments, the series is unlikely to premiere before 2027 at the earliest.
The Empyrean Series (or Empyrean Saga) is a wildly popular adult “romantasy” series centered on Violet Sorrengail, a young woman forced into a brutal war college for dragon riders. Known for its enemies-to-lovers romance and high-stakes action, the series includes three books so far Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm, with two more planned.
On the book side, Yarros confirmed in February 2026 that she had returned to writing the fourth installment of the Empyrean series, giving fans something to read while they wait for the show.
