Apple moved camera-equipped AirPods into advanced testing stages this week, marking a major milestone toward launching its first AI-focused wearable device designed to give Siri visual awareness. Testers inside Apple are actively using prototypes in the design validation testing stage, the final development phase before early mass production begins, according to media reports.
The cameras will not capture photos or videos for users. Instead, low-resolution cameras mounted on each earbud stem feed visual information to Siri, enabling hands-free AI assistance for navigation, shopping reminders, and real-world object identification. Apple designed the feature to work similarly to image uploads in chatbot applications, allowing users to look at objects and ask Siri questions without pulling out their iPhones. A small LED light illuminates when the AirPods transmit visual data to the cloud.
Apple initially planned to launch the camera-equipped AirPods in the first half of 2026 but delayed the product because its next-generation AI-powered Siri remains unfinished. The upgraded Siri system will launch in September 2026 as part of iOS 27, macOS 27, and iPadOS 27 updates, positioning the AirPods for a potential fall release. Apple has spent approximately four years developing the product, which represents the company’s broader push into AI-centered hardware alongside rumored smart glasses and pendant devices.
The new AirPods will feature slightly longer stems to accommodate cameras in each earbud while otherwise resembling the current AirPods Pro 3 design. Apple has not yet finalized branding and the earbuds might launch as AirPods Ultra or AirPods Pro 3 With Cameras rather than AirPods Pro 4. The company entered the design validation testing stage after years of development, with production validation testing scheduled next before full manufacturing begins approximately two months before release.
Industry analysts first predicted camera-equipped AirPods in June 2024 when Ming-Chi Kuo suggested Apple would use cameras to enhance Spatial Audio in the Apple Vision Pro. Apple filed a patent in June 2025 outlining how AirPods cameras would function as proximity sensors capable of recognizing objects and determining matter types. The company reportedly expects strong demand and is securing components for mass production while continuing to refine Visual Intelligence features before committing to a final launch date.
