Electricity consumers in Pakistan may face another increase in power bills as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested a fuel price adjustment of Rs. 1.72 per unit for April.
The CPPA has submitted the petition to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), seeking approval under the fuel cost adjustment mechanism. If approved, the increase will apply nationwide through all distribution companies, including K-Electric in Karachi.
NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing for June 2, where it will review the request and decide whether to allow the proposed increase.
According to CPPA, the adjustment is based on April’s electricity generation mix. Nuclear energy contributed 22.07%, followed by hydel at 21.89%. Local coal accounted for 15.61%, while imported coal made up 14.14%. Smaller contributions came from gas, furnace oil, RLNG, and solar sources.
Transmission losses during the month were recorded at 1.95%, which were also included in the adjustment calculation.
Officials said the regulator will examine fuel cost data and generation figures before making a final decision. Any approved increase will be passed on to consumers in their electricity bills.
Consumers are already facing high base tariffs and reduced subsidies, adding further pressure on household and business expenses.
