Questions have been raised about whether personal data is safe and whether subsidies will be cut if verification through the QR Code for the Electricity Subsidy is not completed on time.
The federal government of Pakistan has also warned consumers to remain alert to fraudulent QR codes and links circulating online across various unverified platforms.
Citizens nationwide are being urged never to share personal information on unverified platforms, as scammers are actively exploiting the new system.
The government recently introduced a QR code–based system to make electricity subsidies targeted, requiring consumers to verify their identity and household information.
When a consumer scans the QR code, they are directed to an online portal where Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), mobile number, and electricity meter details must be entered.
Verification is then completed through a one-time password sent to the registered mobile number linked to the consumer’s national identity card.
Officials say the new QR code–based system is designed to detect multiple meters registered under different members of the same family across various locations.
The system will also determine whether a consumer using fewer electricity units is genuinely eligible to receive the subsidised tariff rate.
According to sources, data from NADRA, power distribution companies, and other government databases will be combined to assess the financial status of each household.
