The Punjab Mass Transit Authority confirmed the withdrawal of the transport subsidy despite no significant reduction in petroleum product prices across the country.
According to media reports, the free travel facility was originally introduced in April 2026 as part of a public relief package and was announced for one month.
Officials later considered extending the scheme and prepared relevant recommendations before the government made its final decision to discontinue the facility.
Nearly 800,000 passengers benefited daily from free travel across metro, Orange Line, Speedo, and Green Bus services throughout Punjab province.
Of that total, approximately 290,000 passengers used the Orange Line Train daily, while over 100,000 travelled on the metro bus service without paying fares.
The subsidy was originally introduced by the provincial government to ease the financial burden of inflation and rising petroleum prices on daily commuters across Punjab.
From June 13, all passengers travelling on the mass transit network in Punjab will be required to pay the regularly prescribed fares once again.
