Meta has announced a desktop version of its Edits video editing app alongside an AI-powered production assistant that can suggest content ideas and deliver analytics-based guidance. Meta revealed both updates at an invite-only creator event in Los Angeles last week, where a select group of creators got an early look at the platform’s roadmap.
The desktop version of Edits is the more immediately consequential announcement. Until now, Edits operated exclusively as a mobile app, limiting creators and social media marketers to phone-based editing workflows. Desktop access removes that constraint and integrates Edits into broader production environments where most professional video work happens. Marketers managing multiple accounts and campaigns will find the desktop interface significantly easier to incorporate into existing content pipelines alongside tools like Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and other professional editing software.
The Edits AI assistant operates similarly to Meta’s recently launched creator assistant chatbot in its creator dashboard, functioning as a production partner rather than a content generator. The assistant provides tips based on the performance data of published posts and helps creators develop concepts for future videos informed by what has previously worked. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri noted in a weekly Q&A on Instagram Stories that the AI assistant may eventually assist with video editing itself and provide explanations of data trends directly within a creator’s analytics dashboard, though those capabilities are not part of the initial test.
The current weekly Edits update also added expanded inspiration sourced from trending Instagram content, new transition effects, the ability to create multiple project versions, and a new beta tab where users can test experimental features before wider rollout.
Meta has pushed near-weekly functional updates to Edits since its launch, steadily building it into a genuine alternative to CapCut and other standalone video editing tools for creators working inside the Instagram and Facebook ecosystem.
