The Punjab government has officially introduced a juvenile driving permit system, allowing individuals between the ages of 16 and 18 to legally ride motorcycles and scooters across the province under specific conditions.
According to DIG Traffic Waqas Nazir, the permits will be issued by the Punjab Traffic Police starting this week. Under the new policy, permit holders will only be allowed to operate motorcycles and scooters with engine capacities of up to 125cc.
The annual permit fee has been set at Rs. 500. Applicants must possess either a Smart National Identity Card (SNIC) or a B-Form and obtain written consent from their parents or legal guardians before applying.
Authorities have stated that all applicants will be required to pass both a traffic sign test and a practical road test to demonstrate their knowledge of road safety rules and riding skills.
Traffic police officials emphasized that the permits are subject to strict compliance with traffic laws. Any permit holder found committing serious or repeated traffic violations may face suspension or cancellation of their permit.
The initiative has been introduced to provide a legal framework for young motorcycle riders while promoting responsible driving habits and improving road safety. Officials believe the system will help reduce the number of underage and unlicensed riders on Punjab’s roads while encouraging greater adherence to traffic regulations.
Further details regarding the application process and permit issuance centers are expected to be announced by the Punjab Traffic Police in the coming days.
