The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has finalized a comprehensive security plan for the 9th and 10th of Muharram. Consequently, authorities have decided to suspend mobile phone services across various areas. This measure primarily aims to maintain law and order. Furthermore, it prevents any untoward incidents during religious gatherings.
Officials stated that mobile phone services will face complete suspension in some sensitive areas. Meanwhile, authorities will impose partial restrictions at other sensitive locations. Peshawar will experience strict protocols. On the 9th of Muharram, mobile services will remain partially suspended during the main procession. Additionally, law enforcement will completely seal the Peshawar cantonment area.
Moving forward to the 10th of Muharram, authorities will establish security checkpoints. They will also enforce special security arrangements at all entry and exit points of the city. The government has conducted a thorough threat assessment. They declared 400 Imambargahs across the province as sensitive or highly sensitive. Moreover, officials categorized 286 Muharram processions as highly sensitive. Similarly, they placed another 190 processions into the sensitive category.
Security forces are actively conducting search operations in different areas. Therefore, authorities will install walk-through gates around processions and Imambargahs. Furthermore, they will ensure continuous monitoring through CCTV cameras.
To streamline these massive security operations, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has established a central control room. This hub operates directly from the Civil Secretariat to monitor Ashura security arrangements. Finally, monitoring and coordination centers are now active at the offices of deputy commissioners in all districts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.
