The federal government has doubled the Climate Support Levy on petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) from Rs2.50 to Rs5 per litre, in compliance with a condition set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
According to an official notification, the increase has been offset by a corresponding reduction in the petroleum levy on both fuels, keeping retail prices unchanged.
The petroleum levy on diesel has been reduced from Rs79.97 to Rs77.47 per litre, while the levy on petrol has been cut from Rs66.66 to Rs64.16 per litre. Both adjustments amount to Rs2.50 per litre.
The federal government said the new rates took effect from July 1.
It added that the reduction in the petroleum levy was made specifically to offset the rise in the Climate Support Levy, and that the adjustment between the two levies has not resulted in any change to fuel prices for consumers.
