Apple is working on a new feature that could make it much easier for Windows PC users in the European Union to share content with an iPhone. The feature would allow users to copy and paste text and other supported content between both devices. However, Apple does not expect it to arrive before fall 2027.
The project began after Microsoft submitted a request through Apple’s EU Interoperability Request system. Apple started work on the request in March this year. Later, in June, the company shared its proposed implementation plan.
Apple plans clipboard syncing between iPhones and Windows PCs
If the feature launches as planned, users will be able to copy text and other supported content on an iPhone and paste it directly onto a Windows PC. Likewise, they will also be able to copy content on a Windows PC and paste it onto an iPhone.
Apple says the clipboard will stay in sync even if the app is not open on the screen. As a result, users will not need to keep the app running in the foreground for the feature to work.
According to Apple’s official request documents, the company also plans to let developers build extensions for clipboard sharing. These extensions will allow paired devices, including Windows PCs, to exchange clipboard content. However, users must first give one-time permission before clipboard sharing becomes available.
Apple says the feature requires a large amount of engineering work. Because of that, the company does not expect it to be ready until fall 2027. It will first become available through a developer beta. After testing, Apple plans to release it to the public.
Since this request is linked to the European Union’s interoperability rules, Apple has not confirmed whether the feature will launch in other regions. Even so, the company could expand support outside the EU in the future if it chooses.
