Xiaomi has launched its new Redmi 17 series in Malaysia, adding two new phones to its budget lineup. The series includes the Redmi 17 4G and Redmi 17 5G. Both models share the same design and several key specifications.
The two phones feature large 6.9-inch IPS LCD displays with a 120Hz refresh rate. However, Xiaomi has moved away from the FHD panels used in their predecessors. The new models instead offer a 1600 x 720px resolution.
Battery life is a major focus of the Redmi 17 series. Both phones pack a large 7,500mAh battery with support for 45W wired charging. They also support 22.5W reverse wired charging for powering other devices.
The main difference between the two models is their chipsets and storage technology. The Redmi 17 4G uses the MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra, while the 5G model runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. Both phones are available with 4/6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128/256GB storage options. However, the Redmi 17 4G uses slower eMMC 5.1 storage. The Redmi 17 5G gets faster UFS 2.2 storage instead.
The camera setup remains the same across both models. Each phone has a 50MP main camera on the back and an 8MP selfie camera. Xiaomi has also added a programmable RGB light on the rear. The RGB light can display incoming notifications and system status alerts. This gives the phones an extra visual feature that is not common in this price range.
Both Redmi 17 models also offer IP64 ingress protection for added resistance against dust and water splashes. Other shared features include NFC, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Redmi 17 4G comes in Black, Deep Blue, Lotus Purple, and Oak Green. It starts at MYR 669 ($163) in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the Redmi 17 5G comes in Black, Deep Blue, and Vivid Orange.
The Redmi 17 5G starts at MYR 769 ($188) in Malaysia. With a larger battery, 120Hz display, and updated chipsets, the new series targets buyers seeking affordable phones with long battery life.
