Apple could expand its smart home ambitions with a dedicated home security system and monitoring service in 2027. According to Bloomberg, the company is working on a privacy-focused security camera that could use artificial intelligence to monitor its surroundings without relying on traditional video footage.
The reported camera would take a different approach to home monitoring. Instead of continuously analyzing actual video, its AI technology could track activity in the surrounding environment. Bloomberg also says Apple plans to pair the device with a new home security and monitoring service, though details remain limited.
The report comes as Apple continues to build its smart home ecosystem. The company is expected to launch a new home hub before the end of the year. The device will reportedly allow users to control compatible smart home products from one central platform.
Earlier rumors also suggested Apple was developing a camera alongside the upcoming home hub. Those reports described it as a wireless camera with Siri integration. It could also connect directly with Apple’s new home hub and other smart home devices.
Apple already offers HomeKit Secure Video for supported third-party cameras through the Apple Home platform. The feature uses end-to-end encryption and iCloud to securely stream and store footage from compatible HomeKit cameras.
Meanwhile, Apple is improving its camera features with iOS 27. The Home app can create written summaries for motion alerts. It can also show important highlights and group footage from multiple cameras together.
However, the new iOS 27 camera features require a 2TB or higher iCloud+ plan. HomeKit Secure Video has lower requirements and works with an iCloud plan offering at least 50GB of storage.
Apple could eventually connect its reported home security service with iCloud+ and existing HomeKit Secure Video features. Such an approach would allow the company to expand its subscription business while strengthening its privacy-focused smart home ecosystem.
