Indian audio storytelling platform Pocket FM has doubled its revenue run rate. It reached an annualized figure of $500 million over the past year. This growth stems largely from its aggressive embrace of artificial intelligence. Notably, AI now powers 93% of the platform’s entire catalog.
The reliance on AI runs even deeper for fresh material. Co-founder and CEO Rohan Nayak confirmed AI produces 99% of new content. However, the startup still keeps humans central to the process. Specifically, human creators handle the ideas and core storytelling.
Nayak framed this human involvement as a deliberate strategy. He said creating lasting intellectual property genuinely requires people. Therefore, the company builds AI tools around the creative process. It avoids generating content entirely autonomously without human input.
The economic case behind this shift proves compelling. Nayak said AI made content production roughly 80 times cheaper. Consequently, work that once took a year now takes a day. That covers producing around 100 hours of finished content.
This efficiency dramatically expanded the platform’s overall output too. Its 550,000 creators now produce 2.5 million content hours yearly. By comparison, the entire catalog held 100,000 hours two years ago. Today, the library spans over 770,000 audio series.
More content has meaningfully improved listener retention rates. The 12-month revenue retention rate climbed to 76% recently. Two years ago, that same figure stood at just 44%. More stories simply match a wider range of preferences.
Geographically, the United States now leads the company’s business. It accounts for roughly 70% of the annualized run rate. Pocket FM serves over 250 million listeners across 20 countries. Meanwhile, it also expanded into the UK, Germany, and France.
The company is now pushing beyond audio content entirely. Its microdrama app Pocket Saga reached a $15 million run rate. Notably, that app’s content is entirely AI-produced without humans. It even converts popular audio stories into AI-generated videos.
Pocket Entertainment is reportedly in talks to raise fresh capital. Reports suggest it seeks up to $120 million presently. That would value the company at around $2 billion. However, Nayak said no public listing is planned soon.
