The City Traffic Police has requested the temporary suspension of Green Electric Bus services on two Rawalpindi routes due to ongoing underpass construction on Peshawar Road.
In a letter to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Farhan Aslam identified Route No. 1, which operates between Saddar Stop and Bhatta Chowk, and Route No. 4, which runs from Marrir Metro Bus Station to Chowk 26 No. via Peshawar Road.
According to the traffic police, construction work has forced authorities to divert traffic onto narrower roads, including routes from Abid Majeed Turn toward Convoy Road and from the Rafay Mall area toward Chairing Cross and Maryam Hospital.
The CTO said the diverted roads have limited capacity and that the larger Green Electric Buses could cause traffic congestion and increase the risk of accidents.
He requested the RTA to suspend the two routes until construction work is completed to facilitate commuters and improve road safety.
The request follows a fatal accident on Adiala Road on Wednesday, in which a nine-year-old girl died after a Green Bus hit the motorcycle carrying her and her father. The incident later sparked protests, during which the rear of the bus was set on fire.
Meanwhile, the district administration has closed schools along Peshawar Road for two months and directed them to conduct online classes during the construction period.
Parents have criticized the decision, arguing that major construction work could have been completed during the summer vacation to minimize disruption to students and commuters.
