Samsung is considering a bigger focus on HBM memory as demand for AI hardware continues to grow. The move could give the company more capacity for its higher-value memory products. HBM, or High Bandwidth Memory, has become increasingly important for AI systems. Samsung is one of the major companies producing these chips, alongside other memory makers.
According to industry sources, Samsung is asking several partners to complete their DDR5 production lines earlier than planned. The company is also considering investments in additional outsourced production capacity.
The strategy could free up some of Samsung’s internal manufacturing capacity. That space could then be used to produce more HBM chips, which are seeing strong demand from the AI industry. However, the shift could put more pressure on the DDR5 memory market. DDR5 supply is already tight, creating problems for PC builders, server makers, and laptop buyers.
Samsung has reportedly discussed the plan with several manufacturing partners. These include Dreamtech in India, Hanyang Digitech in Vietnam, and SFA Semicon in the Philippines. The reported changes highlight how AI demand is affecting the wider memory market. As chipmakers allocate more resources to HBM, traditional memory products could face additional supply pressure.
