Authorities in Punjab have arrested a student in Bahawalpur accused of poisoning his father with chemicals prepared using guidance obtained from artificial intelligence, in a case that has drawn attention to the misuse of AI tools and the online activities of young people.
According to media reports, the arrest was carried out by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab after the agency received an intelligence tip from abroad.
Acting on that information, the NCCIA director ordered an operation in Bahawalpur that led investigators to a home laboratory the accused had reportedly built after developing an interest in crime dramas.
Investigators said the student had obtained chemical materials from Australia and Islamabad to prepare the poison used in the attack. He is alleged to have made an earlier attempt on his father’s life, and when it failed, turned to AI once again for guidance on how to proceed.
Officials said the case highlights growing concerns about how artificial intelligence tools can be exploited for harmful purposes, as well as the need for closer monitoring of minors’ activity online.
