The Punjab government has decided to establish a stroke centre in every division of the province, following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The meeting was told that 40 primary stroke centres are currently fully operational across Punjab, and a target has been set to activate 17 more by December.
Under the Stroke Programme launched by the Chief Minister, 336 stroke patients have so far received timely treatment, saving them from permanent disabilities.
The briefing noted that all 40 primary stroke centres are staffed with trained doctors and medical personnel. A stock of 710 TNK injections, used to treat stroke patients, is also available.
Comprehensive stroke centres are functioning at the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences, Lahore, and the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology. Neuro-angiography suites are planned this year at major teaching hospitals in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and Sargodha.
The meeting was also informed that several teaching, children’s and district headquarters hospitals across the province, including in Lahore, have either set up primary stroke centres or been supplied with the injections required for emergency stroke treatment.
