Microsoft has quietly implemented a significant cleanup of the Windows 11 lock screen, dramatically reducing the number of widgets displayed by default. The change addresses months of user complaints about an unnecessarily cluttered interface that distracted from core functionality.
Previously, Windows 11’s lock screen displayed multiple widgets simultaneously, creating a busy visual experience that many users found overwhelming. Information panels competed for attention, reducing the lock screen’s effectiveness as a quick-access tool. Microsoft listened to feedback and simplified the default configuration substantially.
Under the new approach, weather is now the only widget displayed on the lock screen by default. This single-widget approach maintains functionality while eliminating visual clutter. Users retain complete control over customization through Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, where they can add additional widgets or disable lock screen widgets entirely if preferred.
The rollout occurred gradually without significant fanfare. Changes began appearing in July 2026 for new users. Microsoft released KB5120998 as a preview update in August, though the update notes initially failed to mention the lock screen changes. By early September 2026, Microsoft distributed mandatory update KB5124008 to existing Windows 11 users, completing the broader rollout. The update notes clarifying these changes only became visible after Windows Latest investigated the modifications, suggesting Microsoft hadn’t prioritized publicizing the change.
This quiet approach contrasts with typical Microsoft software update announcements. The company usually highlights new features and improvements prominently in release notes and blog posts. By implementing the lock screen simplification without major announcement, Microsoft essentially acknowledged the change addressed a user experience problem rather than introducing an exciting new capability.
The weather widget provides useful at-a-glance information without overwhelming the interface. The retention of customization options ensures power users who preferred multiple widgets aren’t forced into the simplified experience.
