Google Wallet is quietly working on a new QR code payment feature. The feature could let Android users pay abroad through Alipay+. However, Google has not yet made any official announcement about the rollout. The project surfaced in a recent teardown of the Google Wallet Android app.
The feature appears to work in a simple way. Users scan a QR code at Alipay+ merchants using the Google Wallet app. The payment then completes on Alipay+ using a Visa or Mastercard credit card already saved in Google Wallet. In addition, the scanner carries a “Supported QR code” label so users know which codes work.
Code analysis of Google Wallet Android version 26.29.954779400 revealed the feature on July 28, 2026. Specifically, resource strings for Traveler QR appeared alongside user flow prompts. For example, the app warns users that payments complete on Alipay+ using the saved card. If the card does not qualify, the app prompts users to add a Visa or Mastercard.

Alipay+ gives Google Wallet access to a massive payment network. The service currently covers more than 100 markets and 1.8 billion users through 40 partner wallets. Partner apps include PayPay in Japan, Bluecode in Europe, and KBank in Thailand. The network also includes GCash, Kakao Pay, Touch and Go, and TrueMoney across Asia. As a result, Google Wallet users could soon pay at any Alipay+ merchant across the region.
The test environment also hints at an early launch region. In fact, a sandbox link points to a DBS-hosted test domain, which suggests Singapore may be an early market. Furthermore, the teardown places the feature in a Japan-focused context. Google Wallet currently relies on NFC and FeliCa for contactless payments there.
Google has not confirmed when Traveler QR will launch publicly. However, Alipay+ announced in October 2025 that cross-border acceptance had expanded past 100 markets. Over 6.5 million wallet users made their first Alipay+ cross-border payment in the first half of 2025.
For Pakistani travelers, the feature could change how they pay in major Asian destinations. Specifically, visitors to China, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, and the Philippines could skip cash and currency conversion. However, Pakistani wallets like JazzCash and Easypaisa are not yet part of the Alipay+ network. As a result, Pakistani travelers would still need a Visa or Mastercard loaded in Google Wallet.
