The government is considering measures to improve access to export financing and international markets for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to strengthen their competitiveness and boost exports.
Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani chaired a high-level consultative meeting at the Finance Division on Thursday to discuss challenges faced by SME exporters and review recently announced government support measures. He said the government aims to improve access to financing, expand foreign market opportunities, reduce business costs and make it easier for smaller businesses to operate.
During the meeting, Kayani urged participating banks to appoint focal persons for the Export Finance Scheme (EFS), clearly communicate eligibility requirements and establish timelines for processing applications. Participants also discussed improving the Export Facilitation Scheme and exploring export credit insurance and risk-sharing mechanisms for smaller businesses.
Exporters highlighted challenges related to taxation, regulatory compliance, certification requirements, freight availability and shipping costs. They also stressed the need for better access to machinery, technology and green certification to improve productivity and meet international standards.
Kayani directed relevant institutions to consult chambers of commerce and exporters, document key issues and establish a tracking mechanism with clear responsibilities and timelines. The government will also review options to improve digital access, collateral arrangements and export credit support to help SMEs expand their presence in international markets.
