Pakistan Railways has set a target of operating 14 freight trains by January 2027 to meet growing demand from the business community and increase its revenue. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi at the Railways Headquarters.
During the meeting, officials also approved the establishment of a dry port in Khanewal to strengthen freight operations and generate additional income. The initiative is part of the department’s efforts to improve its financial position and expand railway-based cargo services.
To improve railway safety, the government plans to seek a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) investigation into train examiners in connection with accidents caused by mechanical faults. Pakistan Railways will also install five additional weighbridges across the country by December 31 to prevent overloading.
The minister directed officials to hold operational meetings at the divisional level instead of the Railways Headquarters to improve efficiency and performance. Other decisions included phasing out DVM and DVS coaches and operating sleeper factories in double shifts to increase production.
These measures aim to improve railway operations, strengthen freight transportation, and increase revenue through better infrastructure and management.
