Amazon recalls 260,000 power banks over chemical burn reports

Amazon is recalling back 260,000 power bank units from its AmazonBasics line on account of overheating. The power banks came in six models with the capacity of 16,100 mAh, 10,000 mAh, 5,600 mAh, 3,000 mAh, 3,000 mAh w/ microUSB cable and 2,000 mAh w/ microUSB cable. While the models bear theof Amazon, the product documentation suggests that they were developed in China by Guoguang Electric Company Ltd.

The decision came after 53 reports were recorded of the hazard indicating one chemical burn and four incidents of property damage due to fire and smoke. The chemical burn resulted from exposure to battery acid. The official hazard listed by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says that the battery of power banks can overheat and ignite, causing fire and burn hazards. With any rechargeable battery, overheating indicates for the device to be unplugged or safely disposed of.

After the decision, Amazon has removed all the product listings from its website and the product links redirect to a “Page Not Found” error. Scoring high on customer service, Amazon has simplified the refund process by setting up a dedicated site for returning the defected power banks. However, Amazon will only provide refunds after they have received the items. Once a buyer has submitted the online refund form, Amazon will send a prepaid shipping box which is to be sent back with the power bank. Once Amazon receives the power bank, it will credit the amount in the buyer’s account.

Previously Samsung had to halt production and sales of Galaxy Note 7 devices when they were reported to catch fire.
