Armed men set fire to an automated teller machine (ATM) of a private bank opposite the district courts on Tuesday night, destroying the machine, which was worth more than Rs2.14 million.
The bank management and police suspect the attackers tried to break open the ATM to steal cash and set it on fire after failing. The blaze also spread to a nearby cash deposit machine and damaged it.
Rescue 1122 teams reached the site and brought the fire under control, but the ATM and its cash boxes had already been badly damaged.
Civil Lines Police registered a case under Sections 427 and 435 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the complaint of the Operations Manager of bank, Aqeel Irshad. Police are using CCTV footage to trace the culprits.
