‘Beyond Good and Evil 2’ is officially still alive. After languishing in development hell for years, the highly anticipated Ubisoft title recently received an encouraging update. A staff member recently confirmed their active involvement with the project throughout 2026.
First announced back in 2008, the current iteration of the game was officially unveiled at E3 2017. Currently, the project holds a massive industry record. It has officially passed ‘Duke Nukem Forever’ as the video game with the longest development cycle. Consequently, fans are eagerly awaiting any scrap of news regarding this elusive sequel.
A Subtle Beyond Good and Evil 2 Development Update
Months ago, game director ‘Fawzi Mesmar’ confirmed that the team was still working hard on the project. Now, the game has received another subtle update on social media.
Recently, ‘Rik Godwin’ took to Bluesky to share some exciting news. Godwin serves as the Lead Writer and Associate Narrative Director at Ubisoft Bordeaux. He revealed that he spent some of 2026 working on Beyond Good and Evil 2 in a support and consultant role. While Godwin received permission to confirm his involvement, he did not share any further project details.
Since joining the studio in November 2023, Godwin has worked on major titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and the ‘Last Rites’ expansion of Ghost Recon Wildlands. Currently, Ubisoft Bordeaux, located northwest of the main developer Ubisoft Montpellier, is acting as a support studio for the project.
Surviving Mass Layoffs
In January 2026, Ubisoft conducted a massive wave of layoffs. This restructuring unfortunately resulted in the permanent closure of several global studios. Furthermore, the layoffs caused the cancellation of major games, including the ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake’.
Despite these extreme circumstances, Beyond Good and Evil 2 miraculously survived the cuts. The game remains in active development. With Godwin and other talented developers now on board, Ubisoft is slowly pushing the project forward.
Connecting the Franchise
Ubisoft last teased this prequel during 2024’s ‘Beyond Good and Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition’. That special release featured an exclusive treasure hunt mission. This mission provided a deeper look into the childhood of protagonist Jade and served as a direct narrative link to the upcoming entry. Currently, players can grab this anniversary edition for a discounted price of $11.99 on the Ubisoft Store and Steam.
Ultimately, this upcoming prequel faces an unenviable task. It must live up to the massive legacy of a beloved cult classic. Furthermore, Ubisoft confirmed the game will require a consistent internet connection to play both its single-player and co-op modes. Since the project still lacks a release date, time will tell when gamers will finally experience this industry mystery.
