OpenAI is closing in on a milestone that once seemed distant. On Friday, the company said ChatGPT now serves 900 million weekly active users. That puts the AI chatbot within reach of 1 billion weekly users. At the same time, OpenAI revealed it has 50 million paying subscribers, showing strong growth on both free and paid tiers.
The momentum has picked up quickly this year. In a blog post, OpenAI said January and February are on track to become the biggest months for new subscribers in its history. The company noted that people turn to ChatGPT to learn, write, plan, and build projects. As more users join, the product continues to improve. OpenAI says users now see faster responses, better reliability, stronger safety systems, and more consistent performance.
The latest figure marks a sharp increase from October 2025, when OpenAI reported 800 million weekly active users. In just a few months, ChatGPT added another 100 million weekly users. That pace highlights how quickly generative AI tools have entered daily life for students, developers, and businesses.
OpenAI shared these numbers alongside news of a massive funding round. The company has raised $110 billion in private funding, making it one of the largest private rounds ever recorded. The investment includes $50 billion from Amazon, along with $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank. The round values OpenAI at a $730 billion pre-money valuation.
Importantly, the funding round is still open. OpenAI expects more investors to participate in the coming months. With fresh capital and surging user growth, the company now stands closer than ever to the 1 billion weekly user mark.
