Earlier this year, we told our readers that soon Google Chrome browser will start blocking ads on its own but there was no confirmation when this functionality was to be made effective. Now Google has made it official that starting from 15th February it will block ads that are super annoying, obtrusive and distort the user experience.
Google Chrome currently doesn’t come with an ad-blocker and users have to install third-party extensions in order to have an ad-free experience. Now with this announcement, users will not have to rely on third-party ad-blocker applications. This can prove to be a call of death for these tools because according to Google policy, it will block its own advertisements too if any of them are found obtrusive.
There is one catch to this ad-blocking update; all the ads will not be blocked but only the advertisements which have not cleared Google’s ‘Better Ads Standards’ will be tackled. Any website in violation of Google ad standard will be blacklisted and admins will have to submit a request to re-consider the blacklisting once the ad experience on that website has been improved.
Advertisements are annoying, especially obtrusive pop-up and pop-under ads. This step by Google will help website administrators utilize their web properties without destroying the user experience of their website which in return will increase the level of trust, good-will and hence sales from the customers. A win-win situation for everyone.
