The Coalition just caved to fan pressure. The developer officially added the PvP Versus mode to the Gears of War: E-Day early-access open beta.
Initially, the studio restricted this opening beta weekend exclusively to the Horde Siege mode. Fans quickly expressed intense dissatisfaction. Players felt misled because the early access period was heavily promoted as a pre-order bonus. Adding fuel to the fire, pre-release previews already showed content creators enjoying the Versus mode. Consequently, the developers reversed their decision just a day before the servers go live.
📢 We heard you. We acted. PvP Versus is coming to this weekend's early access period for the Open Beta. Available for pre-download now.

Gears of War: E-Day Beta Schedule & Preload Details
The early-access weekend kicks off tomorrow, August 6, and runs through August 10. However, this initial period is locked behind a paywall. Only players who pre-ordered the game or subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate can participate. After that, an open access weekend will run from August 13 to August 17 for everyone else.
Preloading is already live across Xbox and PC platforms. Interestingly, players must download the Versus client and the Horde Siege mode as completely separate files.
What to Expect: 4v4 Versus & Massive Horde Siege
Gears of War: E-Day takes the franchise back to its roots for a prequel story featuring Marcus Fenix and Dom. However, the multiplayer brings significant changes. The Coalition entirely rebuilt the Versus mode. Instead of the traditional 5v5 format, matches are now scaled down to 4v4. Players will test a brand-new movement system, equal starting loadouts, and classic Power Weapons. The studio has not confirmed which specific maps or game modes will appear this weekend. Eventually, the full game will feature Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and a Power Core-focused mode called Crucible.
Meanwhile, Horde Siege transforms the classic cooperative experience. The mode now supports a massive 12-player setup. Players split into three squads and fight across much larger environments. During this beta, you can drop into the “Golden Quarter” map using four different playable classes. Specifically, squads must complete shifting objectives before surviving a brutal final battle and extraction phase.
Furthermore, PC players can use this beta to test Nvidia DLSS and Reflex settings. The full suite of technical features will launch alongside the complete game on October 6.
