Google is now testing its own version of Apple’s NameDrop, more than two years after Apple introduced the feature with iOS 17 in 2023. Apple’s tool lets users share files and contact details by bringing two iPhones together, and Google seems ready to offer Android users a similar experience.
The feature recently appeared in a Google Play Services build under the name Gesture Exchange. It also includes a linked activity called Contact Exchange and uses NFC to trigger the process. Early screenshots reveal how the tool works.
The first image lets users choose what to share, such as a photo, phone number, or email address. A receive-only option is also available for users who prefer not to send anything back.
The second image displays the received details. Users can save the contact with a single tap or instantly start a video call or text message.
Google appears to rely on NFC only for the initial handshake, while the rest of the transfer likely uses another protocol. The feature currently focuses on contact sharing, but Google could easily expand it to file sharing later.
The final name may also change, since Gesture Exchange and Contact Exchange look like early labels. Development is still in progress, and the rollout may still take time.
