Google has unveiled a new AI-powered feature in Google Messages aimed at safeguarding Android users from scam texts. This advanced scam detection tool is designed to analyze message patterns in real-time, identifying suspicious activity before it turns into a potential fraud attempt.
The AI technology within Google Messages continuously scans SMS, MMS, and RCS messages for fraudulent patterns. If a message is flagged as a potential scam, the app will alert users with a warning. They will then have the option to dismiss the message, block the sender, or report the scam.
Unlike traditional spam filters that primarily block messages before a conversation begins, this AI-driven tool focuses on detecting scams that start as seemingly innocent conversations but later shift toward deception.
Alberto Pastor Nieto, Senior Product Manager for Google Messages, emphasized the importance of tackling evolving scam tactics. “Traditional spam protections are less effective against these latest social engineering tactics that escalate mid-conversation,” he explained. “To better protect users, we developed AI models that monitor suspicious patterns in real-time while ensuring user privacy.”
The scam detection feature is now rolling out in English to users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, with plans to expand to more regions soon. By default, the tool is enabled but only monitors messages from unknown contacts. Additionally, Google assures that all message processing happens directly on users’ devices, keeping conversations private. Users who prefer not to use the feature can disable it in the Spam Protection settings within Google Messages.
Alongside scam detection, Google has announced other updates for Android users, including live location sharing in the Find My app. Meanwhile, Pixel users receive exclusive features such as multi-camera streaming support. With this, Pixel 9 owners can now connect GoPro cameras or other Pixel devices via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to capture different angles on apps like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.
