Google Messages May Soon Integrate Whatsapp Video Calling

Google Messages is reportedly working on integrating WhatsApp’s video calling feature, signaling a significant development in the app’s evolution as a leading messaging platform. According to sources, the feature is currently in development and will be limited to one-on-one video calls. This move aligns with Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance its messaging ecosystem and compete more effectively with rival platforms.

The app’s RCS support and simple integration within the Android ecosystem have established its standing among competitors, while regular updates ensure it remains current. Recent advancements feature secure cross-platform RCS messaging, dual SIM RCS support, a native backup tool, RCS support for 911 emergency services, and additional enhancements.

The latest update, initially highlighted by AssembleDebug in Google Messages v20250131, has rolled out a specific button for WhatsApp Video Calls right within the app. This serves as a convenient way to start a WhatsApp video call directly from Google Messages, provided that both parties have the Meta-owned app installed.

Currently, video conversations initiated through Google Messages default to Google Meet, contingent upon the installation of the application by both users. With the most recent update, users can select between WhatsApp and Meet by selecting the video call icon, contingent upon availability. Should the recipient lack the installation of WhatsApp, the option will not be displayed.

The feature is reportedly still under development and is currently restricted to one-on-one video conversations, whereas group calls will continue to utilise Google Meet.
