Google permanently removed FAQ rich results from search for all websites starting last week. The company updated its Search Central structured data documentation without publishing a blog post or explanation. Government and health sites that retained the feature since 2023 restrictions also lost FAQ rich result eligibility.
Google stated FAQ rich results no longer appear in search as of May 7. The FAQ search appearance and rich result report will be dropped from Search Console in June 2026. Furthermore, support for FAQ rich results through the Search Console API will be removed in August 2026.
The deprecation affects the expandable dropdown display in organic search results that many sites used previously. Teams built reporting workflows around FAQ rich result performance including Search Console enhancement reports and Rich Results Test validation. Consequently, these teams need to update processes before June for UI-based reporting and before August for API pipelines.
Google launched FAQ rich results in 2019 after which widespread adoption led to significant abuse concerns. Many websites created artificial or low-quality FAQ sections solely to gain rich result visibility. Some sites stuffed irrelevant questions or provided misleading answers just to occupy more search result space.
However, Google confirmed it will continue reading FAQ structured data for page comprehension purposes despite removing the feature. Sites with FAQ markup don’t need to rush removing it according to Google documentation. Meanwhile, FAQPage schema remains a valid Schema.org type that may help artificial intelligence systems understand question-answer relationships.
