Rockstar Games recently opened the floodgates with the highly anticipated Extended Look for Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6. We already covered the release of GTA VI: An Extended Look, but the sheer volume of on-screen action makes it easy to miss the finer points. Beyond the obvious shootouts and heists, the developers have buried fascinating details in tiny animations and throwaway dialogue. From returning mechanics to new map areas, here is everything hiding beneath the surface of the latest gameplay footage.
GTA 6 Extended Look Reveals RDR2 Mechanics & Gameplay Systems
Rockstar heavily recycled mechanics from Red Dead Redemption 2 for their newest title. Movement is slower and more realistic. Furthermore, deliberate item and NPC interactions make a clear return. The footage also reveals a slow-motion targeting system. During this sequence, both the head and the heart glow red to indicate distinct weak points.
The game closely tracks your micro-interactions. For instance, Jason pets a dog in one scene. Immediately, a small angel-like notification icon appears on the screen. This detail strongly hints at a hidden morality or affinity system.
Additionally, players will not always have access to their full arsenal. Certain scenarios, like the one shown in the Extended Look where Jason and Lucia take up a security job, strip the characters of their firearms. Consequently, this forces players to rely entirely on hand-to-hand combat or environmental improvisation.
Character Dynamics & Organic Progression
Jason and Lucia do not just stand around when they act as AI companions. During a convenience store robbery, the AI-controlled Jason independently handled the cashier while the player controlled Lucia at the entrance. Furthermore, the two protagonists are not permanently attached at the hip. The game features solo jobs offered specifically to one character, leaving the partner behind.
Rockstar also added tiny contextual animations to make their relationship feel natural. In one subtle moment, Jason holds a door open for Lucia and physically turns around to ensure she walks through. Some fans currently view Jason as a bit bland and unexpressive compared to Lucia. However, others appreciate the dynamic of a stoic, supposedly military-background guy paired with an energetic girlfriend.
Moreover, their criminal progression feels incredibly organic. Jason and Lucia do not instantly become top bosses. Instead, they must introduce themselves to new contacts, complete minor jobs, and patiently wait for callbacks to officially join established crews.
World-Building & Bayside Map
The world of Leonida looks absolutely massive. The extended footage officially confirms a fully fleshed-out area outside of Vice City named “Bayside”. Players will also find a ridiculous amount of side activities scattered across the map. These include structured motorcycle racing, backyard wrestling, basketball, kayaking, and gym workouts.
Social media deeply integrates into the open world. GTA 5’s Snapmatic survives the jump to Leonida and exists alongside new platforms. More importantly, influencer culture happens live in the game. In one bizarre encounter, an NPC influencer literally livestreams a police chase from the back seat of the player’s vehicle.
Fans widely praise the game’s motion capture, stunning lighting, and massive NPC density. Every background character features unique clothing and builds. This high level of polish finally invalidates the infamous old leaks from “cyberleek“, proving those previous clips came from a severely outdated build.
However, the new minimap faces some backlash. Viewers criticized the design as unpolished, especially noting how 2D buildings aggressively pop into 3D when approached. While PC players expect a two-year wait for their release, many are already counting on modders to fix the minimap on day one.
