Google has announced plans to invest $15 billion in India over the next five years, marking one of its largest international commitments to artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. The company revealed the investment during a ceremony in New Delhi, where it also announced a massive data center and AI hub project in the southern city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
According to Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, the Visakhapatnam facility will be the company’s largest AI hub outside the United States, with plans to expand its capacity to “multiple gigawatts” in the future. “We are committing capital investment of $15 billion over the next five years,” Kurian said, describing the initiative as a cornerstone of Google’s global AI expansion strategy.
India, expected to surpass 900 million internet users by the end of the year, has seen a surge in demand for AI tools and cloud-based solutions across industries. The new investment is designed to meet this growing demand and strengthen India’s position as a key digital economy.
Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw thanked Google for the major announcement, calling it a critical step toward achieving the goals of the India AI Vision. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu described the project as a “very happy day” for the state, while Technology Minister Nara Lokesh termed it a “game-changing investment” following a year of intense discussions. “This is a massive leap for our state’s digital future and global standing,” Lokesh said on X.
The $15 billion Google investment in India adds to a growing wave of AI-related commitments by global tech companies. Earlier this month, US-based Anthropic announced plans to open an office in India next year, following a meeting between CEO Dario Amodei and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi, in a post on X, emphasized India’s strong tech ecosystem and the country’s determination to harness AI for economic growth.
Other AI leaders, including OpenAI and Perplexity, are also expanding into India. OpenAI plans to open its own office later this year, while Perplexity recently partnered with telecom giant Airtel to provide 360 million users with a free one-year subscription to Perplexity Pro.
