Iran has reportedly warned that the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait could become the next major global shipping chokepoint under threat after escalating tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns over international energy supplies and maritime trade.
According to a Reuters report citing Iran’s Press TV, a senior official of Yemen’s Houthi movement said the group’s forces were prepared to block the Bab el-Mandeb Strait if Saudi Arabia continued what they described as military actions against Yemen.
Houthi Political Bureau member Mohammed al-Farah reportedly accused Washington of encouraging Saudi Arabia to intensify operations in Yemen, warning that further escalation could result in both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb being disrupted.
Iranian state media reported that a simultaneous threat to both waterways could create a major shock for global energy markets, with crude oil prices potentially rising toward $200 per barrel in a worst-case scenario.
Energy analysts have warned that such a development could increase fuel prices, shipping costs, and inflation pressures worldwide.
Middle East expert Fawaz Gerges, speaking to Reuters, said Tehran appears to be signaling its ability to expand the conflict beyond the Gulf region by creating risks for two of the world’s most important maritime routes.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, located between Yemen and the Horn of Africa, connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and serves as a key route for international shipping, including energy shipments. Any prolonged disruption could force vessels to take longer routes around Africa, increasing transportation times and costs.
The Houthi movement has previously targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea following the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, claiming its actions were aimed at vessels linked to Israel. The attacks led several major shipping companies to avoid the Red Sea route, while the United States and United Kingdom conducted military operations against Houthi positions.
Security analysts said any further escalation between Iran and the United States could increase the risk of disruptions in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, adding further pressure on global oil markets already affected by instability in the region.
