The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has ordered all public and private educational institutions to close for two days each week for the next two months, as authorities scramble to conserve fuel amid a worsening petroleum shortage in the province.
Under directives issued by the provincial cabinet, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department notified schools, colleges and other institutions that Fridays and Saturdays will now be off-days across the board.
Classes will resume as usual for the remaining five days of the week, and the arrangement will stay in place for two months.
The move is part of a broader effort to cut fuel consumption and reduce pressure on the transport sector, which has been strained by fuel shortages affecting commutes for students, teachers and staff.
By trimming the school week, officials aim to lower daily fuel demand tied to transportation without disrupting the academic calendar altogether.
The department confirmed that the revised schedule applies to all relevant public and private educational institutions in the province, leaving no exemptions for either sector.
