Islamabad is set to offer free public Wi-Fi across major locations, but users will need to verify their identity before accessing the network. The initiative, led by the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), aims to improve digital accessibility while ensuring cybersecurity across public spaces. Officials say the system will maintain digital logs to track usage and prevent misuse.
Under the new setup, anyone wishing to use the free internet must provide their name and mobile number. Each connection will be logged, recording which user accessed Wi-Fi at specific public spots. This step is part of broader efforts to strengthen security and protect both users and the network from potential cyber threats.
Wi-Fi hotspots will be installed in high-traffic areas, including metro bus stations, central commercial districts, and other public spaces. To accelerate deployment, NTC has coordinated with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other relevant departments for technical support and smooth implementation.
Officials emphasized that the identity verification requirement is essential not only for user accountability but also to safeguard public networks. The project reflects the government’s commitment to expanding digital access while maintaining robust cybersecurity standards across Islamabad.
