Recently, reports revealed Toyota’s ambitious plans for its most iconic vehicle. Toyota is preparing a major overhaul for the next-generation Corolla. The automaker will offer conventional petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric powertrains for the upcoming model.
A Powertrain for Every Driver
Toyota is actively developing a brand-new platform. This flexible architecture will support every engine type without compromising passenger or cargo space.
First, the next-generation Corolla Hybrid will utilize a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor. Together, this setup will produce roughly 134 horsepower, with 94 hp coming from the engine and 40 hp from the electric motor. Furthermore, this new hybrid system operates 10% to 20% more efficiently than the current model. Toyota might also introduce an all-wheel-drive option by placing an additional electric motor on the rear axle.
Meanwhile, traditionalists can breathe easily. Toyota will keep a standard petrol variant in the lineup. The company might use a turbocharged version of the new 1.5-liter engine. Alternatively, they could offer an updated version of the existing 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
Additionally, Toyota will finally introduce a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Corolla. This specific version packs a larger battery than the standard hybrid. Consequently, the vehicle will travel longer distances purely on electric power before the petrol engine engages.
Finally, a fully electric Corolla will join the lineup. Toyota has not confirmed specific markets for the EV yet. However, if it hits the United States, buyers could see single- and dual-motor configurations. Reports suggest the EV targets a driving range of at least 250 miles (402 kilometers).
Futuristic Design & Smart Interiors
Toyota previously teased this massive shift at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. During the event, Toyota President and CEO Koji Sato discussed the multi-powertrain strategy. The company also showcased a radical concept design to preview the car’s future direction.
The upcoming Corolla adopts a much sharper, futuristic appearance. The concept model features a heavily sloped windscreen, slim lighting elements, and a highly aerodynamic profile.
Inside, the production model gets a heavily redesigned cabin. Toyota will integrate larger displays and remove most conventional controls. As a result, passengers will experience a much more spacious interior.
Launch Timeline & the Toyota Corolla Legacy
The new Corolla will officially launch sometime in 2027 as a 2028 model. Currently, Toyota has not announced final specifications, prices, or exact market availability.
The Corolla remains one of Toyota’s most important global models. Since its original debut in 1966, the company has sold over 50 million units. It stands as one of the best-selling cars in automotive history, and this upcoming generation clearly aims to maintain that dominance.
